Vivace VS At Home Microneedling

Skin Revitalization

If you are considering investing in microneedling treatments to address your skin concerns and renew your complexion, you may be weighing up the pros and cons of professional treatment versus at-home microneedling. While DIY microneedling may be an inexpensive alternative, it’s often less powerful and can be unsafe option to professional in-clinic microneedling treatments. Below we compare the difference between the two systems.

What Is Microneedling?

Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), microneedling put simply is the insertion of fine short needles into the skin to create tiny punctures. These microscopic wounds in the skin trigger the body’s wound healing and repairing process to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Collagen is an essential protein that works to keep the skin looking dense, smooth and youthful, and as we age collagen production is slowed resulting in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin laxity. Collagen can also be lost through skin injury such as acne scarring or stretchmarks. Due to this, microneedling addresses these most common skin concerns, as well as uneven skin texture and enlarged pores to rejuvenate the skin for a visibly smoother, radiant and renewed complexion.

At-Home Microneedling Devices Explained

With the amazing skin benefits that microneedling boasts, it comes at no surprise that there is an abundance of at-home microneedling devices available on the market. These are typically hand-held devices with a mini wheel covered with hundreds of tiny needles to gently prick the face. As the needles are much smaller than professional devices, they can be used daily and are recommended for use in the evening amongst a skincare regime to further help skincare products be effectively absorbed into the skin. However while these DIY devices can be considerably less expensive than in-clinic microneedling treatments, there are a number of differences.

One of the biggest differences between at-home versus professional microneedling are the results. As DIY devices are not designed to penetrate the skin and have shorter, more blunt needles than those designed for medical professionals, the effects will not be as profound or as immediate. Dr Gina Messiha of Ocean Cosmetics explains further, “The longest needles you can buy for at home use are 0.3ml and 0.5ml, compared to what we use in the clinic at 2.5-3.5ml, which produce the most optimum results.”

Overall, at-home devices predominately work to offer a light exfoliation effect and increase blood flow for a more luminous complexion. Margie Koumbarakos of BeautyMedix Clinic explains that in-clinic microneedling treatments can simply not be adequately replicated at home and caution needs to be taken, “Bacterial complications and infection issues are very real as adequate sterilisation is difficult to replicate. Trauma to the skin is also a real concern as the domestic home applications or devices can be prone to breakage and can leave small broken fragments of the needle on the skin.”

Additionally, Dr Messiha labels at home microneedling as not only unsanitary but inappropriate, “It is unhygienic as these devices should be a one-time use and should be properly sanitised. People who have sensitive or acne-prone skin should be especially careful with these devices, as they can do more harm than good.”

Why Choose Vivace?

In comparison, Vivace is the next generation of professional microneedling treatments as the device combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency technology and LED Light Therapy to create the ultimate 3-in-1 treatment that targets a host of skin concerns. By harnessing these 3 technologies to engage the natural skin healing process Vivace works to increase collagen and elastin for tighter, younger looking skin. Vivace is also used to reduce the appearance of acne scars, improved skin tone and texture, wrinkles, pore size and stretch marks.

The Vivace device uses 36 gold-plated microneedles to create microscopic insertions into the skin whist simultaneously releasing radiofrequency thermal energy. This addition of radiofrequency works to further stimulate wound healing and skin renewal to provide a skin tightening and lifting effect in one single comfortable treatment.

FDA cleared and TGA listed, the Vivace system has been designed with comfort in mind with virtually zero pain and no downtime required. Treatments last approximately 45 minutes, with an additional 30 mins required for pre-treatment numbing. Results can be seen immediately post treatment and visible improvements in the appearance of wrinkles, skin tone and texture continuing for the next three months.
